Someone from Deseret Book contacted me to see if I'd like to review a copy of a new Mother's Day picture book for moms. I'm a mom. I love books. I love picture books. And I love the idea of books as gifts. So I said yes.
The book arrived in today's mail. It's a small, fun shape - less than 6.5 inches tall and 7.5 inches long. And it's a bright pink!
Once There Was A Mother by Emily Watts, Illustrated by Destin Cox
I read it to my 14 year old daughter and my 4 year old son (the oldest and youngest in the family who happened to be nearby when the mail arrived). My daughter said it was adorable. My son said it didn't have enough explosions (note It had zero explosions). I thought it was cute. It's definitely not a book geared to kids, but meant for moms... moms of all ages. It doesn't gloss over how hard it is being a mom, but it doesn't drag you down with how hard it is either. The page below is one of my favorites. My daughter and I both especially loved that the books the mom has are titled "Again" and "Again." And the artwork, simple but beautiful!
It made me smile. It made me tear up. Overall, this would be a cute gift to give to a mom for Mother's Day (coming up May 14th)! I would be happier to receive this than to receive chocolate. Well... who am I kidding, I'd like this AND some chocolate!
I think I'm in the minority when I saw that I like Mother's Day. I'm all for a day of recognition where my hubby makes me a nice meal, and my kiddos give me homemade presents. I know I'm far from a perfect mother, but from talking to many other moms, I'm lucky that it isn't something that weighs me down on a regular basis.
Once There Was a Mom is a sweet book for any mom (whether you are a Mother's Day fan or not). It's very short (perfect for the mom who hardly has time to read), but loaded with little instances where all mothers can relate.
There is a page that talks about a mom coming home and the children yelling that they missed her. I noticed that with my sister last week. She visited for a couple of days and when she called her family to say she was heading home they were all shouting with joy!
Motherhood is rough at times. And it can feel thankless, but as moms we make a HUGE difference in our kiddos lives. I think this would be a great book for any mom that needs a little reminder about the difference she is making, and how her kids are making her different too.

Bought one for me, and then have to buy another one to gifted it. Such a darling book about how epic moms are. Definitely going to be a classic in our house.
I didn't think the book was that great but my mom and sister cried reading it. So it must be good for the actual moms!
Gave this to my daughter for her birthday. She has her kids (6 & &) read it to her. Such a great story and the kids understand exactly what mommy does for them!!!
